In a stunning return, John Grisham presents the long-awaited sequel to his debut novel, The Firm. Titled The Exchange, this thrilling book follows the journey of Mitch McDeere, now a high-powered partner at the prestigious law firm Scully & Pershing in 2000. Grisham’s fans will be captivated by the first 37 pages, as McDeere makes a trip back to Memphis for the first time since the events of The Firm, meeting an old friend along the way, writes Rob Merrill in a review for the AP.
Grisham takes the opportunity to fill in the 15-year gap in the story since Mitch and his wife, Abby, fled Memphis to escape the Chicago mob. This backstory, however, is inconsequential to the new tale Grisham weaves. The narrative truly begins when Mitch is summoned to Rome to handle a case involving a Turkish company that constructed a $400 million bridge in the Libyan desert, which Colonel Gaddafi, still alive in the year 2000, refuses to pay for. As a London-based associate from Scully is sent to investigate, she is taken hostage, transforming the legal thriller into an intense action-packed ride.
While Grisham fans will devour this book, there are moments when the pace seems too fast, leaving little time to fully explore the characters. Mitch is constantly on the move, be it in a car, on a plane, or in a boardroom, resulting in clipped conversations and a furious plot pace. Grisham effectively mirrors the urgency of Mitch’s mission through his writing, but some of the most compelling parts of the story occur when there is a chance for the narrative to slow down and breathe.
