A 29-year-old felon from Cathedral City is currently in custody without bail, suspected of possessing two handguns, one of which is stolen.
Javier Ernesto Estrada was apprehended on Thursday on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, possessing an unregistered firearm, possessing ammunition, committing a felony while on bail, and violating Post-Release Community Supervision, according to Sgt. Paul Heredia of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Heredia stated that the Riverside County Gang Task Force Region 2, along with the Coachella Valley Violent Crime Gang Task Force, executed a search warrant at a residence on Verona Road at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.
“During the search, Gang Task Force Officers found a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and a .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun,” wrote Heredia. “The .40-caliber handgun had been previously reported stolen.”
Estrada was arrested at the scene, along with 35-year-old Sarah Gaffney of Cathedral City, who was found in possession of Fentanyl.
Both suspects were taken to the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio. However, Gaffney posted $5,000 bail and was released the same day, while Estrada remains in custody without bail, according to court records.
