2024 Election Experts Warn of Impending Havoc from AI ‘Deepfakes’

Experts have warned that Big Tech firms are unprepared for the onslaught of high-quality political “deepfakes” produced by generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Midjourney ahead of the 2024 presidential election. These platforms allow users to create false images, videos, and posts, including doctored footage of politicians, bogus images, and even videos of events that never occurred. Social media companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Google’s YouTube, and TikTok are set to face an unprecedented proliferation of high-quality deepfakes from US social media users and foreign actors alike. According to political consultant Bradley Tusk, the incentives for social media giants to tackle election-related deepfakes are virtually reversed as they stand to gain more engagement and eyeballs on their platforms. Some deepfakes produced by political campaigns have already surfaced, while experts warn that foreign adversaries and rogue factors could use generative AI to manipulate voters, impacting the integrity of US elections. While several social media companies have invested in synthetic content detection tools, the technical challenges of fighting deepfakes and the concerns of government overreach pose significant limitations. To prevent the flow of misinformation resulting from AI-generated content, Tusk suggests that lawmakers need to repeal Section 230, which shields companies from liability for harmful content shared on their platforms.
