The second season of “Drag Race Philippines” has finally premiered on HBO Go, and it’s shaping up to be an extraordinary one. Among the 12 queens competing for the P1-M cash prize and the title of the country’s next drag superstar, there are three transwomen—a historic moment for the show. The “Drag Race” franchise, originally launched in 2009, has since spread to various countries around the world, including the UK, Canada, Australia, and Thailand.
Before the season premiere, select media had the opportunity to interview the queens, who showed up in their fabulous outfits ranging from campy to glamorous. Rajo Laurel, one of the regular judges, revealed that one of the queens wore a stunning P800,000 gown that night. Laurel had faced criticism for his brutally honest assessments of the contestants in the first season, but he returns as a judge alongside host Paolo Ballesteros, “Drag Race” alumna Jiggly Caliente, and actress KaladKaren.
This season’s guest judges include Maricel Soriano, Anne Curtis, Bretman Rock, Tessa Prieto, and Gloria Diaz. When asked if he would be more lenient this season, Laurel insisted he would remain true to himself. The queens, on the other hand, were accustomed to criticism and judgment, as they face it regularly in their lives as performers.
As the first episode aired, Laurel admitted that there was drama behind the scenes, with fights and conflicts among the contestants—perhaps due to the presence of three trans contestants. However, during the Q&A session with the queens, they were all smiles and positivity, grateful for the opportunity to be a part of Season 2 despite the significant expenses involved in preparing for the visually-oriented competition.
Each queen was asked to share a lesson they learned on the show that others, LGBTQIA+ or not, could relate to and learn from. The answers ranged from discovering hidden strengths and vulnerabilities to the importance of collaboration and self-expression.
New episodes of “Drag Race Philippines” Season 2 will air on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. on HBO Go, with “Untucked” episodes also available on the same day.
