The Golf R is Volkswagen’s top-performing car, but the shift to electrification provides an opportunity for the automaker to explore various options. Volkswagen’s ID-branded electric vehicles come in different sizes and shapes, and the compact nature of electric motors makes it easier to develop efficient people haulers. The automaker’s latest concept showcases the transformation of a calm electric sedan into an exciting powerhouse, although it may not be available for sale.
The ID.X Performance is based on VW’s ID.7 electric sedan but includes enhancements in power, handling, and appearance. The car features carbon fiber front and rear diffusers, as well as 20-inch wheels. VW’s engineers have also made adjustments to the ID.7’s suspension, including toe modifications and a reduction in ride height by around 2.5 inches. To complete its sporty look, the rear deck lid is topped with a noticeable carbon wing.
Equipped with a dual-motor drive system, the ID.X Performance delivers an impressive 551 horsepower, with an additional temporary boost function. VW highlights the benefits of the synchronous front motor and asynchronous rear motor, which result in minimal drag losses and the ability to handle short-term power overloads, making it suitable for the boost feature. The driver can control this system using the gauge cluster display screen. Additionally, the car can be charged at up to 200 kW.
While many concept cars are intended for production, this particular model will probably be another tantalizing creation from Volkswagen that never reaches the market. The automaker frequently develops one-off vehicles for fan events, and the ID.X Performance was designed specifically for an ID Driver’s Club event in Locarno, Switzerland. Volkswagen has previously showcased other exciting EV concepts at this event and has a history of creating similar vehicles for other enthusiast shows.
Volkswagen is getting closer to releasing the ID.7 and has recently started accepting orders for the car in Germany. The automaker is also preparing for the launch of the ID. Buzz, an eye-catching electric van inspired by vintage models, set to arrive in the United States next year.
