In my opinion, it’s a simple matter – if you cannot condemn all forms of terrorism, then you should not be a part of the Democratic Party.
By that standard, a number of my fellow Democrats have lost their place in this party due to their horrific responses to the brutal terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas against innocent Israelis on Saturday morning.
In a misguided attempt to appease the non-existent pro-terrorist Muslim community in suburban Detroit, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer tweeted, “I have been in touch with communities impacted by what’s happening in the region. It is abhorrent. My heart is with all those impacted. We need peace in this region.”
This clumsy attempt to avoid mentioning Israel, Hamas, and terrorism in a statement addressing these issues reminded me of Minnesota Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar’s controversial remarks in 2019 when she referred to the 9/11 attacks as “some people did something.”
REPUBLICAN LAWMAKER PUSHING TO CENSURE RASHIDA TLAIB OVER RESPONSE TO SLAUGHTER IN ISRAEL
Unlike Omar, Whitmer cannot claim to have been taken out of context. Her tweet was clear and straightforward.
However, Whitmer wasn’t the only Michigan Democrat to mishandle their response to one of the deadliest terrorist attacks since 2001.
One notable example was Representative Rashida Tlaib, who called for “dismantling the apartheid system that creates the suffocating, dehumanizing conditions that can lead to resistance” in a lengthy statement. She also stated that the United States should cut off aid to Israel.
This response is simply blaming the victim. While many Democrats, especially younger ones, believe that the Israeli government’s blockade of the Gaza Strip is unjust and cruel, particularly towards children who make up almost half of the Palestinian population, this does not justify the mass killing, rape, and kidnapping of Israeli citizens as “resistance” activities.

As journalist Julia Ioffe put it, “If you’re against the collective punishment of Palestinians, you should also be against the collective punishment of Israelis.”
When the pro-Palestinian Left fails to unequivocally condemn the massacre of Israeli citizens while advocating for the rights of Palestinians, they lose their moral standing and betray the principles of justice and human rights that they claim to uphold.
It is possible to address the root causes of terrorism without condoning it. As Tlaib herself said, not all “resistance” activities are justified, and the bloodshed in southern Israel is evidence of this.
Fortunately, Tlaib does not dictate the direction of the Democratic Party. President Joe Biden, along with five other world leaders, made it clear in a joint statement on Monday night that they stand against Hamas’ terrorists and support the people of Israel:
YES, BIDEN CALLS OUT HAMAS BUT HE’S ODDLY SILENT ON 4 MAJOR ISSUES HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT
“All of us recognize the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people and support equal measures of justice and freedom for Israelis and Palestinians alike. But make no mistake: Hamas does not represent those aspirations and offers nothing for the Palestinian people other than more terror and bloodshed.”
President Biden sets an example. You can support Palestinian freedom, criticize Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and denounce Hamas’ terrorism. In fact, if you fail to do the latter, you undermine the cause of freedom overall.
Some Democrats were willing to publicly criticize their party colleagues for their misguided views. New York Governor Kathy Hochul, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, and Bronx Congressman Ritchie Torres all denounced a rally in Times Square organized by the pro-Hamas Democratic Socialist of Americas (DSA) where a young man displayed a Nazi flag image on his phone.

Representative Torres, aged 35, made particularly powerful remarks. He called the rally “an antisemitic stain on the soul of America’s largest city” and accused the DSA of glorifying Hamas as “resistance.” He emphasized that the lives of Israeli civilians and children who are murdered, wounded, abducted, and terrorized by Hamas mean nothing to the DSA.
A battle for the future of the Democratic Party is already underway. And to me, it’s clear that Torres’ approach is the only way forward, because a Democratic Party led by figures like Rashida Tlaib has no future in the United States.
