Surprising Turn of Events: Trump Abruptly Withdraws $500M Lawsuit Against Michael Cohen

Former President Trump has unexpectedly dropped the federal lawsuit he filed against his former “fixer,” Michael Cohen, earlier this year. Trump had initially sought damages exceeding $500 million, accusing Cohen of spreading false information about him. On Monday, Trump had been ordered to undergo a deposition for the lawsuit. However, a brief court filing from one of Trump’s lawyers on Thursday stated that the case was being dismissed “without prejudice,” leaving open the possibility of refiling at a later time, as reported by Politico. According to a statement from a Trump spokesperson, the former president is currently occupied with various criminal trials and a presidential campaign.

The spokesperson stated that Trump has chosen to “temporarily postpone his justified claims” against Cohen, and added that Trump intends to pursue these claims once he has “overcome the unjustified investigations he is facing.” Sources informed the New York Times that Trump’s advisers were concerned that he might disclose something under oath during the deposition that could be used against him in any of the four criminal cases he is involved in. Cohen is expected to be a crucial witness in one of these cases, which involves the Stormy Daniels payment controversy. He is also anticipated to testify in a civil fraud case against Trump in New York, potentially as early as next week.

In the New York trial last week, a video was played showing Cohen describing how Trump inflated his assets’ value, and the Times reports that Trump “appeared visibly angry upon seeing his former fixer.” In response to the dismissal of the case, Cohen described it as “cowardly” in a Thursday statement. “From the beginning, I have maintained that this case was merely an act of retaliatory intimidation, and Trump’s attempt to evade routine legal procedures further confirms this,” stated Cohen.
