Santa Monica Hit-and-Run Collision Leads to Arrest of Wilmington Man

A man was apprehended by police on Thursday after being suspected of stealing a vehicle in Long Beach, driving under the influence of marijuana, and fleeing the scene of a collision in Santa Monica.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department, officers in the 700 block of Montana Avenue near Seventh Street observed a vehicle running a red light and committing other traffic violations while driving recklessly in the area. The vehicle ultimately collided with another vehicle at Seventh Street and Wilshire Boulevard.

Instead of stopping after the collision, the suspect continued to drive erratically down the Santa Monica Pier ramp into the Newcomb Lot without any regard for public safety, as reported by the police.

The pursuit was terminated after the vehicle was boxed in near the Carousel building at the Pier. Detectives later identified the suspect as Nehemias Rivera-Menjivar from Wilmington, who attempted to flee on foot after the vehicle came to a stop.

Although Rivera-Menjivar was shot with a stun gun, it had no effect on him. After multiple commands from responding officers, he was finally apprehended, said the police.

The suspect confessed to being under the influence of marijuana, according to the police.

Rivera-Menjivar, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on Thursday, was arrested and booked on charges of hit-and-run, reckless driving, evading law enforcement, DUI, and resisting and obstructing an arrest.

Anyone with information about the hit-and-run collision was urged to contact Sgt. Nick Krueger at [email protected] or the watch commander at 310-458-8427.
