NFL Team Executives Terminate Employment After Inappropriate Romantic Involvement

The NFL’s Buffalo Bills and the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres recently let go of their newly appointed chief operating officer, John Roth, and general counsel, Kathryn D’Angelo, due to their romantic relationship. In a joint telephone interview with the AP, Roth and D’Angelo confirmed their dismissal without providing further details. However, they expressed gratitude for their time working under the ownership of Terry and Kim Pegula, as well as Laura Pegula, Terry’s daughter. Both Roth and D’Angelo wished the Pegulas good luck and pledged their support for the Bills and Sabres from a distance.

John Roth joined the organization in January after spending 24 years at Fidelity Investments. He became the COO just three months ago. Meanwhile, Kathryn D’Angelo rose through the ranks of the Bills’ management, starting in 2016 and eventually being promoted to general counsel earlier this year. According to the Athletic, Roth actually recommended her for the promotion, which played a role in the relationship being deemed unethical. This incident may bring back memories for Buffalo fans, as Russ Brandon resigned from his dual role as Bills and Sabres president in May 2018 due to an inappropriate relationship with a female employee.
