Hyundai Motors North America has announced a safety recall of 63,128 cars in Canada and the United States.
Out of the total recalled vehicles, 11,120 are in Canada, according to Jennifer McCarthy, a spokesperson for the company, who spoke to Global News on Wednesday.
These vehicles are being recalled as a precautionary measure due to a transmission electric oil pump issue for the Idle Stop & Go System (ISG), which could potentially lead to a fire.
The recall affects model year 2023-24 Hyundai Palisade vehicles and model year 2023 Tucson, Sonata, Elantra, and Kona vehicles sold in the U.S. and Canada.
McCarthy stated that owners are advised to continue driving the affected vehicles but park them outside and away from structures until the recall remedy is completed.
Owners of the recalled vehicles will receive a notification by mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer for inspection and replacement of the electric oil pump controller if necessary.
“The transmission electric oil pump for the Idle Stop & Go System (‘ISG’) in the subject vehicles might have been assembled with printed circuit boards (‘PCB’) that were damaged during manufacturing by the oil pump controller supplier,” explained McCarthy.
“A damaged capacitor on the pump controller PCB could affect electrical operation, leading to heat damage to the electric oil pump circuit board, connector, and wiring harness. The heat damage increases the risk of a vehicle fire and potential disruption of communication for multiple onboard controllers,” added McCarthy.
