Lainey Wilson made a historic sweep at the 2023 CMA Awards, held in Nashville at Bridgestone Arena on November 8th, taking home a total of five awards. This achievement ties the existing one-year record set by Johnny Cash in 1969 and later matched by Vince Gill (1993) and Alan Jackson (2002). It also sets a new, one-year record for a female artist, overshadowing the four-category wins achieved by Alison Krauss, Taylor Swift, and Miranda Lambert in one night.
Remarkably, just a year after winning new artist of the year, Wilson secured the coveted entertainer of the year award. This rapid rise to success is unprecedented, even surpassing Garth Brooks’ quick ascent from the horizon award to his first entertainer of the year award in 1991. Making this win even more significant is the fact that Wilson is the first woman to prevail in the top category since Taylor Swift in 2011.
Wilson’s triumphant night also included wins in the album of the year, female vocalist of the year, and two awards shared with HARDY – musical event of the year and music video of the year. Winning consecutive awards as the female vocalist of the year, Wilson has now achieved what no artist has done since Miranda Lambert won six in a row from 2010-15.
Wilson’s album, Bell Bottom Country, clinched the album of the year title, reaching a peak of No. 9 on the Top Country Albums chart. This win is especially impressive, as it is only the fourth album not in the top five on that chart to win the award.
Luke Combs’ hit remake of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” secured the single of the year award, having topped Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart for four weeks and claimed the second position on the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks. Notably, it’s the fifth CMA single of the year winner to achieve this feat.
Also, “Fast Car” won the song of the year for its original songwriter, Tracy Chapman. This marks the first time a song written by a solitary writer has won this award since Taylor Swift’s “Better Man” six years ago.
Chapman’s win also holds significance due to her being the first Black songwriter to claim the song of the year award, adding to a shortlist of Black CMA winners.
Jelly Roll took home the new artist of the year title, becoming the second-oldest solo artist to win in this category. This accomplishment is even more impressive considering the typical age demographics of the music industry.
Brothers Osborne and Old Dominion both secured wins in their respective categories, further solidifying their status as perennial favorites at the CMA Awards.
Fiddler Jenee Fleenor continued her winning streak, claiming the musician of the year award for the fifth consecutive year, adding another accolade to her impressive career.
