Individual Confronting Homeowner with Weapon Given Probation by Court

A 30-year-old man, who attempted to forcefully enter a Banning home while carrying a firearm, was found to be on felony probation at the time.

Douglas Jose Salazar of Hemet pleaded guilty on Wednesday to the possession of controlled substances while armed, as part of a plea agreement reached with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office. In return for his confession, prosecutors dropped charges related to carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle and possessing a loaded stolen handgun.

During a hearing at the Banning Justice Center, Superior Court Judge Joshyln Pulliam approved the terms of the plea agreement. Salazar was sentenced to 24 months of probation and six months in a sheriff’s work release program. During this period, he will either have to attend full-time vocational or educational programs, or find gainful employment.

According to the Banning Police Department, on May 8, 2022, around 1:30 a.m., Salazar attempted to gain entry through the front door of a residence located in the 800 block of Latitude Road, near Raven Way.

Despite his efforts, he was unsuccessful, and the resident, whose identity remains confidential, immediately dialed 911. Patrol units swiftly responded to the call and flocked to the area.

A short time later, Salazar was spotted wandering around a nearby neighborhood and was arrested without any resistance, as stated by investigators.

“During the encounter, the officers discovered a loaded semiautomatic handgun, 88 rounds of ammunition, a controlled substance, and drug paraphernalia,” stated a police report. “The firearm was reported as stolen from West Virginia.”

Authorities suspect that Salazar may have been the same person who was harassing residents by going door-to-door earlier that same night. However, the confirmation of his identity remains inconclusive.

The reason behind his presence in the area, as he wasn’t a resident, remains unclear.

Court records reveal that Salazar had a previous misdemeanor conviction for reckless driving.
