Hurricane Lee Gains Strength in Open Atlantic as it Nears Northeast Caribbean

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — As Hurricane Lee continues to swirl through open waters, forecasters are warning that it has the potential to become the first Category 5 storm of the Atlantic season.

Although Lee is not expected to make landfall on its current projected path near the northeast Caribbean, tropical storm conditions are possible on some islands. Details regarding potential rainfall and wind gusts are still uncertain at this time.

This Category 2 hurricane is currently located about 870 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands, with maximum sustained winds of up to 105 mph and a west-northwest movement at 15 mph.

Forecasters predict that Lee will develop into an “extremely dangerous” major hurricane by late Thursday.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami stated that the environmental conditions surrounding the cyclone are favorable for rapid intensification.

According to the center, life-threatening surf is expected to hit the Lesser Antilles on Friday and reach the British and U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, the Bahamas, and Bermuda over the weekend.

Lee is the 12th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30 and reaches its peak in September.

In August, The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration forecasted between 14 to 21 named storms for this season, with six to 11 of them expected to become hurricanes, and two to five potentially developing into major hurricanes.

In the Pacific, Hurricane Jova is currently a Category 4 storm churning through open waters far from Mexico’s southwest coast. There is no threat to land at this time.

Hurricane Jova is located approximately 550 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja, California and is moving west-northwest at 16 mph, with winds up to 155 mph. The storm is expected to weaken starting late Thursday.
