This week, the video games industry is witnessing a test of the transformative potential of artificial intelligence with the introduction of new products by two major players. Game developers are embracing AI development tools that have the ability to generate dialogue, characters, and landscapes, potentially reducing their multimillion-dollar budgets. From the players’ perspective, this technology promises to enhance their gaming experience with more realistic characters and dynamic storylines.

Unity Software, the company responsible for one of the most widely used game development tool kits, recently launched an AI technology aiming to simplify the creation of three-dimensional assets and animations for their 1.8 million developers. Developers can apply to test out Unity’s new products, and Unity has also unveiled a platform for other AI companies to make their apps compatible with their toolkit.

NetEase, one of Asia’s largest games companies, is also testing similar AI technology with the launch of their multiplayer game, Justice Mobile. This game features AI-powered characters that aim to provide players in China with more lifelike and interactive experiences. More than 40 million players have already signed up for the game that is set to release on mobile app stores this Friday.

Gaming companies across the industry are cautiously embracing generative AI systems to overcome production logjams that have caused delays in game releases. Unity’s share price surged by 15% following the announcement of their AI technology, indicating investor enthusiasm for these advancements. Ubisoft and Roblox are also exploring AI integration in game development, and venture investors predict significant cost savings in the industry with the adoption of generative AI.

John Riccitiello, CEO of Unity, believes that AI will have a substantial impact on the gaming industry, potentially surpassing the expansion driven by previous technological advancements. NetEase’s Justice game demonstrates the application of generative AI in a mainstream game, where non-player characters possess autonomy and interact with players to develop their own personalities. Unity is also training thousands of employees to utilize AI in game development, reflecting the industry-wide interest in this technology.

While there is immense potential in AI for gaming, experts recognize the need for balance and caution. Julian Togelius, an associate professor at New York University, acknowledges the potential for new and exciting game experiences with AI but also acknowledges concerns and skepticism from game developers who fear job displacement and potential deterioration in game quality.
