Body camera footage has revealed the events leading up to the tragic police shooting of a man who had previously served 16 years for a wrongful conviction.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) released the footage, which shows 53-year-old Leonard Cure being pulled over by a Camden County deputy for speeding. The encounter escalated as Cure was tasered, hit with a baton, and eventually shot.
Cure had been released from prison in 2020 after the Innocence Project of Florida, a nonprofit legal organization that helps exonerate wrongfully convicted individuals, took up his case.
The shooting occurred at approximately 7:30 am on Monday morning.
According to authorities, Cure initially complied with the officer’s request to exit his vehicle but became uncooperative after he learned that he would be arrested. Cure questioned why he was being arrested for allegedly driving over the speed limit and suggested that he should only receive a speeding ticket.
When the officer informed him that he would be going to jail for speeding, Cure raised his hand and was subsequently tasered. The deputy then instructed him to place his hands behind his back.
