Former Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey appeared undeterred by the boos he received during the Republican presidential primary debate on Wednesday night. In an interview with CNN on Thursday, Christie expressed that his best moment on the debate stage was when he spoke honestly about Donald Trump. Christie, who is known for being one of Trump’s harshest critics among the primary candidates, did not shy away from denouncing the former president.
When asked by CNN’s Poppy Harlow why he believed that moment would resonate with Republican primary voters despite the loud boos, Christie responded saying, “Not every Republican primary voter in America was present at the arena. My intention was to speak to the millions of people who were watching the debate from their living rooms, rather than seeking applause from those present in the arena. If I’m not going to address this issue, then why even run? Other candidates on the stage last night seemed to just concede the race to Donald Trump.”
Out of the eight candidates who participated in the debate (Trump chose not to attend), only two, including Christie, stated that they would not support Trump as the nominee even if he faced convictions in any of the four indictments against him. The other candidate who shared this stance was former Governor Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas. Christie explained that regardless of one’s opinion on the validity of the criminal charges, the behavior exhibited was not befitting of the presidency.
Interestingly, on Thursday, Trump surrendered to authorities in Georgia where he is facing charges of racketeering and conspiracy related to an alleged attempt to manipulate the state’s 2020 election results. You can watch the CNN interview below.
