Chamberlain Cuts Off MyQ API Access, Disrupting Smart Home Integrations

The Chamberlain Group has recently deactivated all unauthorized access to its APIs. This move disrupts the integration of thousands of MyQ smart garage door controller users who depended on platforms such as Homebridge and Home Assistant for convenient home automation. This decision comes a year after Chamberlain discontinued its official Apple HomeKit integration and a few months after it ended support for Google Assistant, reflecting the company’s lack of support for interoperable smart home technology.

In a blog post last week, Dan Phillips, Chamberlain’s chief technology officer, justified the decision, stating it was made to ensure the best possible experience for the company’s 10 million+ users and its authorized partners. Unfortunately, this affects a small percentage of users but is meant to enhance the performance and reliability of myQ for the benefit of all users.

The MyQ smart garage door controller, which was the first of its kind, enables users to open, close, and monitor their garage doors from anywhere. For many people, this move means they will need to purchase a new garage door opener or a third-party controller device to restore their desired functionality. The situation reflects the ongoing downside of investing in cloud-integrated products that may have their functionality altered at any time.

Chamberlain’s limited number of authorized partners do not provide valuable replacements for the unsupported integrations. Consequently, users have been left uncertain about what to do going forward. Furthermore, Chamberlain no longer offers a Home Bridge Hub, which previously allowed integration with Apple HomeKit seamlessly.

Despite Chamberlain’s decision, users have alternative solutions to reestablish smart home functionality, such as the Tailwind iQ3 Pro smart garage controller. This device permits integration with various smart home platforms and supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In addition to this solution, the company manufactures third-party controller devices with hardware workarounds for Chamberlain and Liftmaster openers.
