CAMP DAVID, Md. >> President Joe Biden is refraining from commenting on Attorney General Merrick Garland’s decision to appoint a special counsel to investigate his son, Hunter Biden.
During a news conference held after his summit with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at Camp David, Biden chose not to address the latest development in his son’s legal issues. This is the first time Biden has spoken about the matter since Garland announced the appointment of a special counsel to probe Hunter Biden’s financial dealings.
“I have no comment on any ongoing investigation,” said Biden. “That is the jurisdiction of the Justice Department, and that is all I have to say.”
Garland acknowledged the “unusual circumstances” surrounding the case when he named David Weiss, the U.S. attorney in Delaware who had already been investigating Hunter Biden’s financial dealings, as the special counsel. This decision came after a plea deal regarding tax evasion and a gun charge fell through last month.
These recent developments have raised new questions about the tax evasion and gun charge against Biden, further extending an investigation that seemed close to reaching a resolution just a few weeks ago.
As the special counsel, Weiss now has broad authority to investigate and report his findings. He also has the power to prosecute Biden in any district he deems appropriate, not limited to Delaware.
