In a highly anticipated moment at the second GOP presidential debate, Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy made a compelling argument against children under 16 using “addictive” social media platforms. He emphasized that this is not a political issue but a matter of protecting the well-being of young individuals.
Ramaswamy stated, “If you’re 16 years old or under, you should not be using an addictive social media product, period.” He believes that taking this stance will not only benefit the mental health of the nation, but also help combat the fentanyl epidemic.
During his speech, the conservative entrepreneur tied the discussion to the serious problem of fentanyl smuggling across the U.S.-Mexico border. He referenced the tragic case of an Iowa teenager who lost his life after purchasing fentanyl-laced percocet on Snapchat.
Ramaswamy asserted his commitment to taking action, declaring, “I refuse to be a passive bystander, sitting in the White House like the hollowed-out husk of a current president we have. We will step up and address this problem to stand for Americans and our children.”
However, fellow GOP hopeful Nikki Haley responded skeptically, questioning Ramaswamy’s endorsement of TikTok. It seems that Ramaswamy recently joined the video-based social media app, prompting Haley to wonder about his inconsistency on the issue.
