The crimes took place on August 28, and in both instances, the perpetrator entered the homes through unlocked doors. The suspect allegedly assaulted a man in his 70s at a residence on Fernview Street in Whittier. The victim’s son intervened upon hearing the disturbance, as reported by the Whittier Police Department.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detectives believe the same man then traveled to the Goodhue Street area in East Whittier, an unincorporated county area, where he fatally stabbed Rolland Alexander II. The suspect also took Alexander’s Toyota RAV4, which was later discovered in Chino. Alexander’s daughter and a neighbor made the tragic discovery of his deceased body on August 29.

Sheriff Robert Luna held a news conference on August 30 to address the fatal stabbing and the attack. Following the press conference, someone reported seeing an individual matching the suspect’s description to the Covina Police. The person was apprehended by officers on Badillo Street between Sunflower Avenue and Banna Avenue, according to Covina Police Sgt. Keith Sutherland.

The detained individual turned out to be Encarnacion. The 25-year-old had been reported missing by a relative on August 30 but was released due to insufficient evidence at that time. However, additional surveillance videos were obtained and investigators later focused their attention on Encarnacion. The suspect was placed under 24-hour surveillance by the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau, Operation Safe Streets Bureau, and Detective Division. On September 3, detectives gathered enough evidence to arrest him.

The Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau, which includes the department SWAT team, executed a search warrant at Encarnacion’s residence. Booking records indicate that he was arrested at 9:32 a.m. on Sunday and subsequently booked at the Sheriff’s Norwalk Station.

Encarnacion’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 20 at Norwalk Superior Court. He is currently under custody at Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles.
