HEATWAVE HERO DRESS

Were you, like every other woman in Britain, caught out by this week’s heatwave? With another four forecast for this summer — the next set for the end of this month — it’s time to rethink your wardrobe.

You want something cool, comfortable and acceptable to be seen out and about in. And I’ve got the perfect solution: a throw-on T-shirt dress.

Dinah Van Tulleken (pictured) shares advice on choosing dresses for the UK heatwave. Dress, £65, albaray.co.uk; sandals, £175, russellandbromley.co.uk; bag, £69, mintvelvet.co.uk

MAKE IT MAXI

It should be cotton for maximum breathability. Look for 100 per cent, ideally organic, certainly ethically sourced. Designers The Row, Loewe and Rick Owens have all gone for maxi-length, stopping well below the knee, so that’s what you’re looking for on the High Street. And you want a loose fit, something that hangs rather than clings, so you can move freely and comfortably.

DRESS IT UP

This summer be bold enough to wear one to the office; with a structured sandal and a smart leather bag you won’t look out of place. I even wore this navy Albaray design to a fancy dinner; the tiered skirt smartens it up, and so did a pair of jazzy earrings.

BOLD COLOUR

But there’s no denying these dresses are in their element dressed down. Birkenstocks, a straw bag and simple gold jewellery — hey presto, summer chic! I love M&S’s bright pink design, £29.50 and Cos’s heavyweight teal, which is only £35.40 and also available in neutral and white. It’s certainly a more affordable trend than most.
