Detroit Lions Quarterback Jared Goff Worth a Start in Week 1 Fantasy Football
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is a viable option to start in Week 1 of your fantasy football league if you did not select an elite option in your draft. While players like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts, Joe Burrow, and Justin Herbert are must-starts and should always be in your lineup, some owners may choose to stream the quarterback position based on favorable matchups.
For Week 1, I have identified six quarterbacks who are worth starting due to their friendly matchups. Some of these players could potentially lead your team to victory on their own, while others may contribute enough to keep you competitive. The top three quarterbacks in my Week 1 rankings are Justin Herbert, Trevor Lawrence, and Anthony Richardson. Their matchups and potential performances are detailed below.
Justin Herbert – Los Angeles Chargers vs. Miami Dolphins
Justin Herbert is my top-ranked quarterback for Week 1. The Los Angeles Chargers star will face the Miami Dolphins on Sunday in Inglewood, Calif. The Dolphins defense allowed the second-most fantasy points to quarterbacks last season, along with being vulnerable in terms of passing yards and touchdown passes. In fact, Herbert threw for a season-high 367 yards against the Dolphins last season. I anticipate a high-scoring game, with Herbert utilizing his talented receiving corps to amass impressive passing statistics and fantasy points. It is almost a guarantee that Herbert will achieve at least 300 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Trevor Lawrence – Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Indianapolis Colts
Trevor Lawrence is my third-ranked quarterback for Week 1. The Jacksonville Jaguars playmaker is poised for a breakout season with a healthy backfield and the addition of Calvin Ridley as his top target. In their game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday in Indianapolis, the Colts defense allowed the eighth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks in the previous season. Expect Lawrence to throw for close to 300 yards and find the end zone multiple times.
Anthony Richardson – Indianapolis Colts vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
Anthony Richardson is a lower-ranked option but has the potential to work his way into the top 10 with an impressive rookie debut. The Colts quarterback displayed his athleticism, speed, and throwing power at the combine and during the preseason, which should translate into numerous fantasy football opportunities for his owners. Moreover, the Colts will be without running back Jonathan Taylor for at least the first four games, putting more pressure on the quarterback position. Richardson’s Week 1 matchup is against the Jaguars defense, which allowed the ninth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks in the previous season. They also struggled against rushing and passing yards. This matchup sets up perfectly for Richardson, who should gain at least 60 rushing yards and throw for 200 yards. If he manages multiple touchdowns, he could potentially crack the top 10 quarterbacks for the week.
