Verdugo’s Late Home Run Leads Red Sox to Sweep Jays

In a thrilling game, Alex Verdugo of the Boston Red Sox hit a solo home run off Toronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano to secure a 5-4 comeback victory and complete a three-game series sweep on Sunday.

Romano started the ninth inning with a fastball that was crushed 415 feet into the right-field seats by Verdugo.

The Red Sox, currently in fifth place with a record of 43-42, are now just two games behind the Blue Jays (45-40) in the American League East Division standings. Chris Martin, a reliever for Boston, earned the win.

Jarren Duran played a key role for the Red Sox, scoring three runs with four doubles and an infield hit. Despite being down 4-2 after six innings, the Red Sox managed to tie the game at 4-4 in the seventh inning thanks to a double by Duran and a single by Justin Turner.

Verdugo’s groundout to third allowed Turner to hustle home, tying the game at 4-4, as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. committed a throwing error.

Brandon Belt hit his sixth home run of the season in the sixth inning, giving the Blue Jays a two-run lead. The ball landed in the first row of the left-field seats and was hit off Victoria-born pitcher Nick Pivetta.

Toronto’s starting pitcher Kevin Gausman had a tough first inning, throwing 28 pitches, and was replaced after five innings. He allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out seven batters, bringing his season total to an American League-leading 146 strikeouts.

Rafael Devers had a great performance for the Red Sox, contributing with three singles, including two that drove in Duran in the first and third innings.

Belt tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first with a solo home run to right field.

The Blue Jays got a fortunate break when Boston starter Garrett Whitlock had to leave the game after just one inning due to tightness in his right elbow. This forced the Red Sox to rely on their bullpen for the rest of the game.
