US Climate Envoy Slams New Coal Production in Asia

In the wake of the UN climate summit in New York, John Kerry, the US climate envoy, expressed his frustration at the new coal production in Asia. Kerry believes that this new production is offsetting the carbon emissions reductions made by Europe and the US, the largest historical polluters. Speaking at a breakfast meeting with ministers from various nations, Kerry expressed his increasing anger at the lack of action being taken to combat emissions. He condemned the continued planning, building, and burning of unabated fossil fuel, stating that it makes it impossible to achieve the global temperature rise limit of 1.5 degrees set by the Paris accord. Kerry also criticized companies for their greed and failure to fulfill their promises.

China’s Role in Climate Talks

Kerry’s Chinese counterpart, Xie Zhenhua, also addressed the issue of fossil fuels during a speech to diplomats in China. While Zhenhua acknowledged that it is not realistic to phase out all fossil fuels, he suggested that carbon capture technology could be used to lower emissions when burning fossil fuels. However, this technology is still unproven at scale. China, despite being the world’s largest producer of renewable energy capacity, is still heavily reliant on coal for its energy needs.

Challenges at UN COP28 Climate Summit

As negotiators prepare for the UN COP28 climate summit in Dubai, tensions remain high. The focus will be on reaching agreements on emissions, implementing the global stocktake, and establishing a fund for loss and damage related to climate change. Some negotiators are pushing to include a timeline for the end of fossil fuels and upgraded targets for beyond 2030 in the final agreement. However, petrostates and fossil fuel producers are pushing back against these proposals.
