We’re just two months away from the highly anticipated launch of the Galaxy S24, and leaked information about its features has been steadily surfacing over the past few months. Rumors have circulated that Samsung will incorporate a titanium alloy frame into the Galaxy S24 Ultra, and recent reports from South Korea suggest that these rumors are indeed accurate. As per a new report by TheElec, the Galaxy S24 Ultra will be equipped with a titanium frame, distinguishing it from the rest of the Galaxy S24 lineup. Furthermore, there is a possibility that Samsung will expand the use of titanium frames to more of its models in the future, following in the footsteps of Apple, who introduced titanium into the smartphone industry. Samsung has been diligently developing titanium frames for the past two years and has ultimately decided to incorporate them into the Galaxy S24 Ultra this year.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra: A Titanium Marvel
The company has reportedly reached the final stages of securing the yield rate for the production of titanium cases. Collaborating with multiple Chinese suppliers at its Vietnam plant, Samsung has partnered with Chinese firm Soloman and South Korean firm KH Vatec in its pursuit of titanium frames. Titanium boasts greater strength compared to aluminum and is lighter than steel. Nonetheless, titanium is more challenging to cut and finish, resulting in lower yield rates and potentially higher costs. At present, Samsung employs aluminum frames for its phones, each costing less than $20. However, titanium frames can prove significantly more expensive, thereby increasing the BOM (Bill Of Materials) and potentially affecting the device’s overall price.
While Apple’s transition from stainless steel to titanium in the iPhone 15 Pro series resulted in lighter devices, Samsung’s previous use of aluminum means that the switch to titanium will not reduce the phones’ weight. Consequently, the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s weight is expected to be remarkably similar to that of its predecessor, the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Additionally, the Galaxy S24 Ultra will feature a flat screen, departing from the curved edges found on its right and left sides.
