Unveiling the Laziest Boy: MailOnline’s Exclusive Review of the ‘Ultimate Gaming Chair’ with a Wraparound Screen and Tempur Mattress Inspired by NASA

For gamers in search of the ultimate immersive experience and relief from back pain, look no further than this space-age chair. This unique ‘Dream Chair’ is a collaboration between Tempur, a mattress company, and Xbox, designed to coincide with the release of the role-playing game Starfield. Inspired by Starfield’s retro ‘NASA-punk’ style, this enormous gaming chair may not fit in your living room, but it would fit perfectly in the cockpit of a spaceship.

But it’s not just the style that’s space-age; the chair is also made from a material originally used to cushion the impact of lift-off aboard space shuttles. This week, the ‘Tempur x Starfield Dream Chair’ made a stop at Westfield Stratford, where MailOnline got an exclusive sneak peek to see if it lives up to its stellar reputation. This impressive chair was specifically created to celebrate the release of Starfield, Bethesda Game Studio’s first game in 25 years. With foam similar to that found in Tempur mattresses and a massive wrap-around screen, this chair offers an ideal gaming set-up.

The attention to detail in the chair’s design is seriously impressive. Created by Nichols Alexander, the same team behind a 23 ft Jeff Goldblum sculpture, every inch of this gaming chair is packed with meticulous details. From ‘etched warnings’ on the back of the chair to the multitude of switches and dials (which, I must note, do not actually function), it’s clear that a great deal of passion and attention went into its creation. The chair smoothly retracts from the console and the large wrap-around screen before rotating outwards, making it easily accessible for all users.

As an avid gamer and lover of sitting, I couldn’t wait to try it out for myself. Despite its blocky and angular design, the chair was surprisingly comfortable. The material initially felt firm but soon softened while still offering support. The two armrest joysticks controlled the chair’s movements, allowing for reclining and adjusting the seat position. Even without a game playing on the massive screen, I had a blast scooting back and forth, with the chair’s fast motors whirring beneath my feet. The Tempur foam padding conformed nicely to my back, absorbing the impact of any sudden movements.

Tempur, a company known for selling mattresses, has a legitimate claim to producing an accurate space chair. In the early days of space travel, NASA faced a significant problem – regular chairs could not withstand the G-forces of lift-off. In the 1970s, scientists developed a revolutionary material made up of billions of ‘high density, viscoelastic memory cells’ that existed between a solid and a liquid state. This Tempur foam, created by Danish company Dan Foam ApS using NASA’s formula, slowly reacts to body heat and pressure, providing comfort and support.

While I can’t say I felt the 50 years of space-tech cushioning beneath me, I can confidently say that this was the most comfortable gaming chair I’ve ever experienced. With Starfield expected to offer 30-60 hours of gameplay, this chair would be a welcome addition for any gamer seeking to get lost in outer space from the comfort of their own home. Although it didn’t physically transport me to space, it certainly made me feel weightless.

Unfortunately, this gaming chair is not available for purchase. It will be on display at the TEMPUR Westfield Stratford store in London from 9-29 October, after which it will be awarded to the winner of a charity raffle held by Tempur. So, if you’re eager to try it for yourself, head over to the store and test your luck.
