Unveiling the Challenges: Ford Canada Employees Face Resistance as Monday’s Strike Looms

Ford Workers in Canada May Strike as Union and Automaker Fail to Reach Agreement

September 17 (UPI) — Ford workers in Canada are on the verge of striking as negotiations between the automaker and the union continue to stall on critical issues, including wages. The collective bargaining agreement between Ford and Unifor, the union representing Ford employees, is set to expire at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, as reported by CBC.

Lana Payne, President of Unifor, expressed frustration with the current state of negotiations, describing them as “meeting resistance.” “There has been progress in our talks with Ford, but we still have a long way to go,” Payne said.

According to Payne, Unifor has rejected two offers from Ford thus far. The union is demanding improved pensions, higher wages, investment opportunities, and support for the transition to electric vehicles.

Ford’s only assembly plant in Canada is located in Oakville, Ontario, a suburb of Toronto. Unifor represents 3,400 members working at this plant, where the Ford Edge and Lincoln Nautilus are manufactured. Additionally, there are two Ford engine plants in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, employing 1,700 Unifor members.

The potential strike comes at a time when members of the United Auto Workers from Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis (Chrysler’s parent company) are already striking in the United States.

“Negotiations have been ongoing since our last information session with both the union and the company,” Unifor stated in a press release on Sunday. “However, as we approach the deadline, significant gaps between the two sides still remain. Unifor members at Ford Motor Company should be prepared for all outcomes, including the possibility of a strike. All Unifor members are expected to report to work as usual unless otherwise instructed by union officials.”
