Two Women Urge Others to Lookout for Less Obvious Signs of Breast Cancer

Olivia Franz and Meadow Bailey, both breast cancer survivors, are warning women to be vigilant for less common symptoms of the disease. Despite not having the typical lumps that usually prompt women to seek medical advice, both women were diagnosed with rare types of breast cancer.

Olivia Franz was diagnosed with stage 4 inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) at the age of 27. Initially, she was misdiagnosed with mastitis, an infection-related breast swelling commonly experienced while breastfeeding. However, after a week of ineffective antibiotics, Franz noticed her breast becoming red, almost doubling in size, and experiencing nipple discharge.

Meadow Bailey, on the other hand, had always been healthy, active, and never missed a yearly mammogram. However, shortly after her 49th birthday, doctors called her in for further investigation after noticing something concerning in her last screening.

While IBC is a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer accounting for only one to five percent of cases, lobular breast cancer, which Bailey was diagnosed with, is the second most common type. Both types don’t always present with lumps, making detection more challenging.

The five-year survival rate for IBC that has spread to distant parts of the body is only 19 percent. However, when lobular breast cancer is treated early, the survival rate is nearly 100 percent.

Franz and Bailey emphasize the importance of paying attention to changes in one’s body, following recommended screenings, and advocating for one’s health.

Both women received specialized and breakthrough treatments at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Franz has been cancer-free for three years, while Bailey has been cancer-free for one year.
