Kelvin Fletcher, renowned for his role as Andy Sugden on Emmerdale for over two decades, has embarked on a new adventure in the picturesque Peak District. Alongside his wife Liz Marsland and their four children, the 39-year-old Strictly winner has delved headfirst into the world of farming, with the entire experience being documented for the ITV show, Fletcher’s Family Farm.
In the first episode of the eight-part series, Kelvin and his family unveil an unexpected aspect of farming: artificial insemination. After developing a fondness for their pigs, the couple decides they want to breed piglets. When a package containing ‘very special’ sperm arrives at their doorstep, Kelvin and Liz can’t help but burst into laughter.
Although Kelvin and Liz have been exploring the joys of farming life since their move in 2021, they have yet to venture into breeding their livestock. The process of artificial insemination, which involves inserting semen into a female animal’s reproductive canal, proves to be a steep learning curve for the couple. The artificial insemination kit arrives via the postman, and Kelvin humorously presents it to Liz, comparing it to flat-pack furniture.
Undeterred by the complexity of the process, Kelvin and Liz enter the barn armed with instructions and ready to attempt their first pig insemination. However, their inexperience becomes apparent as they struggle with the positioning, resulting in a likely unsuccessful outcome. Despite the challenges, the couple shares plenty of laughs throughout the process.
Kelvin’s journey into farming began three years ago when he spontaneously purchased the farm. At the time, he and Liz, along with their children Marnie and Milo, were city dwellers without any farming background. Kelvin’s decision to buy the farm was unexpected, as he had just won Strictly and was considering a move to LA for his acting career. However, lockdown changed everything, and the sight of a ‘for sale’ sign on a farm captivated Kelvin.
In January 2021, while discussing potential show ideas with a TV producer, Kelvin casually mentioned the farm. Intrigued, the producer envisioned it as a sitcom-style series, similar to The Good Life, and recommended that cameras follow Kelvin and Liz’s farming journey. This led to the creation of Kelvin’s Big Farming Adventure, a BBC series documenting their progress.
Now, Fletcher’s Family Farm, a brand new series on ITV, continues Kelvin’s farming story. What was once a daunting endeavor has transformed into a successful venture for the couple. From struggling with simple farm tasks to becoming seasoned farmers, the audience witnesses the remarkable transformation.
