Unlocking Scotland’s Galleries: Outgoing Chief Highlights the Long Journey Towards Inclusivity

Scotland’s national galleries, home to some of the most important artworks in the country, are seeking to improve accessibility and inclusivity, according to their outgoing director general, Sir John Leighton. Leighton, who is retiring in February after 17 years at the helm of the National Galleries in Scotland (NGS), believes the institution still has work to do in order to extend its appeal beyond Edinburgh’s middle classes and tourists. The gallery buildings, located on the Mound in Edinburgh, were designed as neoclassical structures resembling Greek temples, and have been criticised for their imposing nature. Leighton hopes that his successor will continue to focus on equal access and inclusion. The NGS is set to open new gallery spaces this month showcasing its Scottish art collection.
