Ukrainian Armed Forces Respond to Russian Missile Carrier Deployment in Sevastopol
The Ukrainian Armed Forces have swiftly responded to the deployment of two Russian missile carriers in Sevastopol, equipped with 16 Kalibr missiles. Natalia Humeniuk, the head of Ukraine’s Southern Defense Forces coordination press center, confirmed this on Oct. 24. She commented on reports of nighttime explosions and underwater drone attacks on the naval group of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the temporarily occupied region of Sevastopol.
Humeniuk stated, “They are constantly concocting scenarios, deluding themselves that they are gaining deeper control over Ukraine. However, they fail to comprehend that we are fiercely protecting our territories. Crimea belongs to Ukraine, and there is an ongoing battle even when they mistakenly perceive calmness and the efficiency of their air defenses.”
The Ukrainian forces are determined to neutralize the potential of the Russian fleet. Humeniuk revealed, “We have observed that the enemy has positioned two frigates, which are missile carriers armed with 16 Kalibr missiles, in combat duty. They aim to create a threatening situation in the Black Sea. It was imperative for our defense forces to react. It is too early to assess the outcome, but I strongly believe that the results will be satisfying for everyone.”
Contradicting these claims, the Kremlin-appointed governor of Russian-occupied Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev, alleged that the Russian Black Sea Fleet successfully repelled a “possible underwater attack.” The city of Sevastopol was shrouded in the sounds of gunfire and loud noises resembling the work of jet bombers throughout the night.
The Russian Defense Ministry has further confirmed the attack by “three unmanned Ukrainian maritime drones” in occupied Crimea. Ukraine has been carrying out numerous operations in Crimea in recent months, resulting in several successful strikes. While Russia often attributes these attacks to drones, local Telegram channels have reported explosions. As a result, the occupying authorities typically close the bridge connecting the peninsula to Russia.
On Oct. 13, the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU), in collaboration with the Ukrainian Navy, launched an operation targeting the Russian Buyan-M class cruise missile carrier and a patrol ship named Pavel Derzhavin. They utilized experimental maritime drone weaponry called Maritime Baby, according to sources from NV. The Navy later clarified that there was no confirmation of damage to the Buyan-M class cruise missile carrier, but did confirm the damage sustained by the Nikolai Muru rescue tugboat during the attack.
