When I discovered that Jeep was unveiling a brand new electric car, the Avenger compact SUV, I couldn’t help but smile wistfully. Never did I think I would see an electric car with the same name. This Avenger, however, is a far cry from its predecessor.
Built on the Stellantis Group’s eCMP platform, which it shares with the Opel Mokka and Peugeot e-2008, this award-winning vehicle has made history as Jeep’s first all-electric car. It’s difficult to wrap your head around the fact that this car, with its unique design and lack of 4WD, is truly a Jeep.
But let’s move forward and assess the new Avenger in the electric era. From the outside, it appears sturdy and sporty, but not overly dramatic. Its design is pleasant and unobtrusive. Inside, there’s a sweeping dashboard flange that adds a touch of uniqueness. Despite its modest dimensions, the Avenger feels surprisingly roomy, especially for the driver and front-seat passenger. Rear-seat passengers may find it a bit cramped unless they’re taller than 6ft.
While the boot is not massive, folding the rear seats opens up a generous 1,295 litres of storage space. Additionally, there are plenty of useful storage slots throughout the interior. The infotainment and performance data screens, both 10.25 inches, provide clear graphics and are easily accessible. It did take me a moment to realize that the ‘gear shift’ mechanism is a row of keys located below the air vents, but it functions well in that peculiar position.
The seats are comfortable and offer ample adjustment options. The cabin materials look and feel high-quality. As expected from a Jeep, there are off-roading features like Selec-Terrain and Hill Descent Control, along with decent ground clearance. However, the Avenger truly shines on the tarmac. It’s not the fastest car, but it certainly doesn’t feel sluggish. It handles bumps and road imperfections with ease, offering a comfortable driving experience.
What makes the electric Avenger stand out is its well-thought-out design and comprehensive standard specifications. Jeep argues that the starting price of €35,995 provides great value. Now, let’s talk about the electric aspect of the car. The Avenger boasts a mixed driving range of 395kms and up to 550kms in pure urban travel. During my test drives, the battery held its charge well, but I would estimate a general driving range of around 360kms due to varying conditions.
One impressive feature is the fast charging capability. With a 100 kW DC charger, you can get a 20% to 80% battery boost in just 24 minutes. Perfect for enjoying a leisurely coffee break. The built-in fast charging element provides an additional 30kms of driving range in a mere three minutes, making it ideal for those who are near home but don’t want to risk running out of battery.
I wish the old Avenger had such a feature, as it often left me stranded without warning. While the new Avenger may not suit everyone’s tastes and may not meet the traditional expectations of a Jeep, it undeniably offers a real choice in the growing market of compact electric SUVs.
