Weird But True: The Morbid Longevity Test That Reveals Your Lifespan

In a twist reminiscent of a plot twist in a movie, the Longevity Test claims to predict when one’s life will come to an end. Developed by an Illinois physician, this macabre quiz assesses various factors such as diet, lifestyle, and mortality markers to determine an individual’s lifespan. Dr. Paul Savage, who co-founded the Chicago-based clinic MD Lifespan, aims to help people extend their lives by adopting an evidence-based approach known as integrative medicine. This approach combines disciplines such as nutrition and stem cell therapy to promote optimum health and longevity.
Dr. Savage’s motivation for his life-lengthening mission stems from his personal experience as a 267-pound cigarette smoker with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and pre-diabetes during his time as an ER physician. Recognizing the importance of knowing how long one might live, he believes that most people desire answers on how to live longer, healthier, and maintain independence. The Longevity Test includes questions about sex, diet, and social interaction to provide a comprehensive assessment.
While the average life expectancy for men in the US is 73 and 79 for women, Dr. Savage boasts an enviable score of 86. Given that most men in his family pass away by the age of 70, this achievement is particularly significant. Interestingly, after running the quiz on a small group of 20s and 30s-aged employees at The Post, it was determined that the average lifespan for a Post employee is 67.5, ten years younger than the average US life expectancy.
How Does the Longevity Test Work?
The Longevity Test measures various aging factors such as blood pressure, weight, and diet to assess whether individuals are on the right path in life. By visiting the survey and providing biological gender, age, height, and weight, individuals can obtain their Longevity Score. The survey consists of 38 questions, including multiple-choice questions related to diet, calorie consumption, and vegetable intake. A healthy diet plays a crucial role in preventing obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Surprisingly, the survey even asks respondents if they like to use olive oil, as it has been linked to a reduced risk of dementia and improved longevity.
Dr. Savage designed the Longevity Score as a tool for individuals to evaluate the impact of their environment, lifestyle, and family history on their longevity. The survey goes beyond diet and exercise, inquiring about smoking, drug and alcohol habits, frequency of exercise, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and family history of cancer and heart disease. Other questions relate to stress levels, reading, sleep habits, and social interaction, reflecting the belief that a healthy body contributes to a healthy mind. Notably, studies have shown that loneliness can lead to brain shrinkage and other adverse conditions.
One peculiar question in the survey asks about the use of supplements containing NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), a compound that occurs naturally in the body and affects energy utilization. While this supplement is believed to have a range of benefits, from reducing high blood pressure to alleviating depression, its effectiveness against these conditions lacks scientific consensus.
Is the Longevity Test Credible?
Dr. Savage acknowledges the difficulty in determining the accuracy of the Longevity Test, especially when unforeseen events such as fatal accidents are not factored in. However, the purpose of the test is not to provide an exact prediction of lifespan but rather to allow individuals to assess their risk factors and discover methods to mitigate those risks. Dr. Savage believes that early detection, targeted prevention, and intervention can help individuals improve their chances of longevity. He quotes his grandfather, stating that without looking and measuring, one cannot identify and address issues.
While the Longevity Test may seem morbid to some, it offers a unique opportunity for individuals to evaluate their health and take action towards a longer, healthier life. By embracing integrative medicine and considering various factors influencing longevity, individuals can make informed choices to enhance their well-being.
