A new Far Cry game is currently in development, and it’s going to be a unique multiplayer shooter focused on extraction, separate from Far Cry 7, according to Inside Gaming.
In January 2023, it was reported that Ubisoft Montreal was working on two separate Far Cry projects. While these games were initially part of the same project called Talisker, changes in management and the game’s direction led to the creation of two distinct games. Far Cry 7, internally known as Project Blackbird, became Ubisoft’s mainline title, while the multiplayer game was named Project Maverick. These games are now completely separate, with Maverick evolving into an extraction-based multiplayer experience.
The Far Cry multiplayer project has undergone several changes over the years. It is now focused on an extraction-based shooter set in a fictional Alaskan location called Alashnica. The game’s story revolves around the player being tricked into going to this region in search of freedom, only to find a chaotic and distrustful environment.
Similar to previous Far Cry games, players will need to scavenge the environment for resources in order to survive. This includes hunting animals for leather to create gear, finding chemicals for gadgets, gathering plants for medical supplies, and discovering weapon parts and bullet casings for weapons and ammunition.
The game introduces a Hideout, which serves as the player’s base of operations and a safe place to store their gathered weapons, gear, gadgets, and more. This new Far Cry game offers both solo and team-based experiences, allowing teammates to share the same Hideout and loot.
In an extraction-based shooter, the focus is on gathering gear, leveling up, and purchasing perks. Although specific details about the perks remain undisclosed, they are directly connected to the leveling system. To level up, players must complete in-game contracts or challenges in order to earn perks.
Maverick is a high-risk, high-reward game, as it features permadeath. This means that if a player dies, they lose everything, including gear, perks, and levels. The only items that are preserved are those stored in the Hideout.
While release date speculation should be approached with caution due to potential internal delays at Ubisoft, Inside Gaming has learned that Maverick is currently scheduled to be launched before Far Cry 7. A tentative release date of April 2025 has been penciled in, with the game expected to enter its alpha phase in the first half of 2024. If Ubisoft adheres to this schedule, more information about Maverick could be revealed in the near future.
