Shawn Fain, the President of the United Auto Workers (UAW), took to the digital platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to provide an update on the ongoing negotiations between his union and three major automakers. In a creative and unique approach, Fain shared a scene from the 2017 film “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” featuring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson. The scene depicts Jackson honking and shouting out of a car window.
“You about done?” Jackson exclaims in the scene. “Tick tock, motherf‑‑‑er!”
This update can be seen as a cheeky insult directed towards the automakers – Stellantis, Ford, and General Motors – as the UAW engages in simultaneous strikes against all three companies for the first time. As the union and the auto companies failed to reach an agreement before the deadline, the UAW decided to go on strike.
A recent Morning Consult poll reveals that a majority of Americans, 54 percent, are in support of the strike.
The UAW has also received support from political figures across the spectrum, including President Biden and former Vice President Mike Pence. However, despite endorsing Biden in 2020, the UAW is withholding its 2024 endorsement from him, demanding tangible actions instead of mere words.
“Our endorsements are going to be earned,” Fain stated on CBS’s “Face the Nation” Sunday. “We’ve been very clear about that, no matter what politician.”
Fain further emphasized that the outcome of this fight does not rest on the current or former presidents but on the pursuit of economic justice for workers who have been left behind for decades.
