Twitter’s Linda Yaccarino Fires Back, Debunks ‘CEO In Name Only’ Accusation by Elon Musk

During the Code Conference in California, Linda Yaccarino addressed speculation that she is merely a figurehead as the CEO of Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter. CNBC’s Julia Boorstin questioned Yaccarino’s authority, noting that Musk still oversees the product team while Mark Zuckerberg’s product team reports to him at Meta.

Yaccarino responded, “Yeah, not nice,” dismissing the notion that she’s in a placebo role. She acknowledged that Musk leads an incredibly talented engineering team and expressed gratitude for having him by her side to run the product.

Boorstin also asked Yaccarino about Musk’s proposal to charge all X users a monthly fee and if she was involved. Yaccarino responded, “We talk about everything,” without providing further details.

According to a recent story by The Financial Times, Musk announced in May that X had hired a new female CEO without revealing her identity. This surprised Yaccarino, who had privately agreed to take the role but had planned to inform her then-employer, NBCUniversal, before the announcement. The unexpected revelation led to speculation that Yaccarino had been named CEO.

Musk’s actions have previously caught Yaccarino off guard. For instance, despite Yaccarino and Anti-Defamation League (ADL) CEO Jonathan Greenblatt speaking positively about a recent meeting, Musk threatened to sue the ADL, claiming they were responsible for revenue loss on X due to accusations of hosting hateful content. Yaccarino addressed this controversy and expressed the company’s commitment to fighting hate.

During the Code Conference, Yoel Roth, former head of trust and safety at Twitter, criticized X for not doing enough to combat hate. He warned Yaccarino about the risks she may face, highlighting Musk’s baseless accusations and how they affected him. Yaccarino responded that X operates on a new foundation of free expression and freedom of speech, distinguishing it from Twitter’s previous approach to censorship.
