The investigation into Wednesday’s Rainbow Bridge vehicle explosion is ongoing and officials are employing 3D scanning technology to create a “digital crash scene.”

Niagara Falls Police Department Chief John Faso said that it is likely that the probe will take a significant amount of time, stating: “This is not something that’s going to happen overnight. It’s a monumental task.”

Experts are now examining whether a mechanical failure may be the cause of the tragedy and they are looking closely at the vehicle’s Event Data Recorder (EDR), which is similar to an aircraft’s “black box.”

The couple involved in the blast, identified as Kurt P Villani and Monica Villani, were driving in an older model Bentley. New York Times reported that the vehicle may have experienced a mechanical malfunction, causing it to suddenly accelerate as it approached the border checkpoint.

This tragic event sparked concern about a potential terrorist attack, but both New York Governor Kathy Hochul and FBI officials confirmed “no sign of terrorist activity.”

FBI Buffalo office and New York Governor Kathy Hochul also ruled out any connection to terrorism, admitting that the couple was planning to attend a Kiss concert in Toronto and their journey began to access the New York side of the bridge.
