The Wichita Northwest High School football team will honor Linda Gregory, a beloved team photographer who tragically passed away in a sideline accident, by wearing “LG” stickers on their helmets for the remainder of the season. While capturing photos of a junior varsity game, the 69-year-old photographer was knocked over and hit her head on the concrete apron of the track at Bishop Carroll High School, as reported by the Wichita Eagle. Linda Gregory’s husband, Mel Gregory, shared that she is currently on life support until her organs can be donated.
The team expressed their condolences on their Facebook page, writing, “RIP Linda! You will never know how much you meant to us.” Coach Steve Martin of the Northwest football team described Linda Gregory as an “amazing person who breathed life into our students here at Northwest. She would go out of her way to make each kid feel important in her own unique way.” Linda Gregory, who operated a photography business, began volunteering to take photos at Northwest games almost eight years ago and consistently attended with her husband. Additionally, she was involved in photographing for the League 42 youth baseball league and served on organizing committees. Students quickly formed bonds with Linda and she mentored aspiring photographers, earning her a special place in their hearts.
According to Coach Martin, the accident occurred quickly on Monday night, and Linda Gregory had picked up her tripod and was attempting to move out of the way when the players collided into her. He describes her as a “fixture” in the school community, and her loss creates a void in their program. Breece Hall, a former Northwest football star who now plays for the New York Jets, expressed praise for the Gregorys in a heartfelt Facebook post.
