A man carrying a sledgehammer met a tragic end when he attempted to scale a fence at a Long Beach elementary school on Tuesday. Bystanders confronted the man, and the police arrived shortly after.
The incident took place on Orizaba Avenue, in close proximity to the Artesia (91) Freeway, between Paramount Boulevard and Obispo Avenue. The Long Beach Police Department received a call about a home invasion in the area just before 2:30 p.m. According to the police, responding officers were initially directed to McKinley Elementary School, located near Paramount Boulevard and 68th Street. It was reported that a man with a sledgehammer had climbed the fence and entered the school’s parking lot.
Witnesses reported that the suspect was apprehended by a group of men as he tried to enter the campus. The police were guided to the scene and found the suspect still detained by one of the men. He was quickly handcuffed by the responding officers.
Shortly after being handcuffed, the suspect became unresponsive and life-saving measures were performed by the bystanders until the arrival of paramedics from the Long Beach Fire Department. Unfortunately, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The exact cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. Due to the suspect’s death while in custody, homicide detectives are conducting an investigation.
The Long Beach Police Department clarified that no force was used during the arrest.
