Tragic Anniversary: ‘Magnum, P.I.’ Actor Roger Mosley Passes Away in Car Crash

On August 7, 2022, we lost a legendary character actor. Roger Mosley, known for his roles in numerous TV shows and films from the ’70s to ’90s, passed away at the age of 83. Mosley was best known for his iconic portrayal of Theodore “T.C.” Calvin on the hit series “Magnum, P.I.”

His daughter, Ch-a Mosley, broke the news on Facebook, paying tribute to her father’s legacy. She wrote, “Roger E. Mosley, my father, your friend, your ‘Coach Mosley,’ your ‘TC’ from Magnum P.I., passed away at 1:17am. He was surrounded by family as he peacefully transcended. Today, we celebrate the incredible man he was. Instead of mourning, let’s honor his legacy. Daddy, I love you. And you loved me too. Though my heart is heavy, I remain strong. I will take care of Mommy, your love of nearly 60 years. You raised me well, and she is in good hands. Rest easy.”

Mosley’s passing came after a tragic car accident on Thursday in Lynwood, which left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. He was initially taken to St. Francis Medical Center but was later transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he ultimately passed away.

Aside from his notable role on “Magnum, P.I.,” Mosley had a prolific career appearing in popular shows like “Night Court,” “Kung Fu,” “Starsky and Hutch,” “Kojak,” “The Rockford Files,” “Baretta,” and “Sanford and Son.” On the big screen, he showcased his talent in films such as “McQ” (1974), “Semi-Tough” (1977), “Heart Condition” (1990), and “Pentathlon” (1994).

Mosley’s versatility as an actor extended beyond television and film. In the 1977 Muhammad Ali biopic “The Greatest,” he delivered a compelling performance as heavyweight champion Sonny Liston.

However, acting was not the only passion in Mosley’s life. He was also deeply involved in coaching high school track and field. At the time of his passing, he served as an assistant coach at Monrovia High School. Mosley’s dedication to the community and commitment to helping young athletes succeed was unparalleled.

Mike Knowles, a track coach at Monrovia High School, spoke highly of Mosley’s coaching style. He described him as a perfectionist who refused offers to coach at the college level because he wanted to nurture local talent. Knowles emphasized how Mosley’s tough approach instilled discipline and taught his athletes important life lessons, earning him the respect and gratitude of his students.
