Top Firearms Organizations Embrace Hunter Biden’s Charges with Enthusiasm

Gun advocacy groups are celebrating the firearms charges against Hunter Biden, despite their opposition to the laws he is accused of breaking.

The Gun Owners of America, for example, highlights that President Joe Biden has been pushing for stricter gun safety laws.

Erich Pratt, the senior vice president of the group, stated, “Gun Owners of America opposes all gun control, but as long as this President continues to target and criminalize gun owners and dealers, his son should face the same scrutiny as the rest of us.”

On the other hand, the National Rifle Association (NRA) took a more subdued approach with a similar message.

Billy McLaughlin, an NRA spokesman, straightforwardly stated, “Laws should be applied equally to all criminals.”

Hunter Biden was indicted on Thursday on three counts related to possession of a firearm while using narcotics. The charges were filed in federal court in Delaware.

Two of the charges stem from a federal form that Hunter Biden completed, falsely stating that he was not using illegal drugs when purchasing a Colt Cobra revolver at a gun store in October 2018. The third charge alleges that he possessed a firearm while under the influence of narcotics.

If convicted, two of the charges could lead to a maximum prison sentence of 10 years, while the third charge carries a maximum sentence of five years. Former federal prosecutors reveal that these types of charges are rarely pursued as standalone charges without a prior criminal record.

In July, Hunter Biden reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. The agreement stipulated that the gun charges against him would be dropped in two years if he stayed out of trouble and never purchased another firearm. Unfortunately, the negotiations fell through in August before finalization.

According to court documents, Hunter Biden was using crack cocaine during the time he purchased the revolver from a licensed firearms dealer in Delaware. He falsely denied drug use on the federal form.

During the 11 days that he possessed the gun, he regularly used crack cocaine. The gun, along with drug paraphernalia, was later found in his car and subsequently discarded in a trashcan outside a supermarket in Greenville, Delaware.

Interestingly, Hunter Biden’s defense may align with Second Amendment advocates’ goals, contradicting his father’s push for stricter gun laws.

His attorney, Abbe Lowell, stated on Thursday that they plan to challenge the constitutionality of the laws Hunter Biden is charged with breaking, citing “recent rulings by several federal courts that this statute is unconstitutional.”

These rulings follow a U.S. Supreme Court decision from last year that expanded gun rights. At the time, the president expressed deep disappointment in the ruling, emphasizing that it contradicts common sense and the Constitution, and should concern everyone.
