Top AI experts from China to be relocated by Microsoft to new Canada-based lab

Tech giant Microsoft is reportedly relocating some of its top AI experts from its Beijing-based Research Asia (MSRA) lab to its Vancouver institute, thereby potentially undermining China’s tech sector. The move is being viewed as a defensive reaction to rising political tensions between the US and China. Reportedly dubbed the “Vancouver Plan”, this initiative could see between 20 and 40 members of staff affected. It is aimed at stopping Chinese tech firms from poaching talent from MSRA to develop domestic versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Microsoft has denied any such plan, stating that it is establishing a new lab that will be organisationally aligned with MSRA, but will have staff from other MSR labs around the world, including China. Some MSRA researchers have said that they turned down recent job offers from Chinese internet companies and are applying for visas to move to Canada instead due to concerns about talent poaching and harassment from authorities. MSRA has been a vital training ground for Chinese talent and has played a significant role in AI development, with many former staff now in prominent roles at leading Chinese tech firms.
