Tom Brokaw Opens Up About his Ongoing Struggle with an Incurable Blood Cancer

In an emotionally charged interview with longtime friend and “CBS News Sunday Morning” anchor Jane Pauley, legendary journalist and anchor Tom Brokaw opens up about his family, his new book, and his decade-long battle with an incurable blood cancer. The interview will be broadcast on CBS and streamed on Paramount+ on Sunday, June 25.

Despite being diagnosed with multiple myeloma 10 years ago, Brokaw, who was NBC’s top anchor for two decades, surpassed the doctors’ expectations that he wouldn’t make it to 83 years old. Reflecting on his illness, Brokaw admits, “I’ve had a bad experience. I used to believe that bad things wouldn’t happen to me, but as I grew older, I developed this condition. The goal is to have as much control over it as possible.”

Brokaw, famously known as “Duncan the Wonder Horse,” had to step away from the work he excelled at due to his illness. He shares, “I had to make a change in my life. I had to give up my daily activities with NBC. It was a mutual distancing, as I was no longer the same person. Suddenly, I found myself in uncharted territory.”

In addition to discussing his battle with cancer, Brokaw also delves into his new book, “Never Give Up: A Prairie Family’s Story,” which is a heartfelt tribute to his hardworking parents.

Brokaw and his wife, Meredith, also share a charming anecdote about playing matchmaker by introducing cartoonist Garry Trudeau to his future wife, Jane Pauley. Brokaw recalls, “I mentioned how often Garry is at the office, and Meredith said, ‘It’s not about you; he wants to meet Jane.’ I hadn’t even considered that!”
