The only Palestinian American in Congress faces a censure motion due to her remarks on the Hamas attack on Israel. However, Rep. Rashida Tlaib rejects any suggestion of sympathizing with extremists. The Democrat, representing parts of Detroit in her Michigan district, tells the Detroit Free Press that she considers Hamas’ actions, including mass killings of civilians and threats to execute hostages, as war crimes. Tlaib, a member of “the Squad,” denounced the violence, referred to Israel as an “apartheid” state, and called for an end to “unconditional funding” from the US.
Tlaib, one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, strongly condemns the horrific violence carried out by Hamas, as well as any retribution against civilians in Gaza. The censure motion was filed by Republican Rep. Jack Bergman from Michigan, who accused Tlaib of solely blaming Israel and the Jewish people for the atrocities, according to CBS News. Bergman stated that there is no moral equivalence between Israel defending itself and Hamas attacking innocent Israeli civilians. He labeled Tlaib’s history of antisemitic tropes and anti-Jewish propaganda as disturbing and evil, asserting that it should have no place in Congress.
Tlaib, whose remarks also drew criticism from some Democrats, defends herself in the Free Press, claiming that her words are being twisted. She emphasizes that as the only Palestinian voice in Congress, her perspective is crucial. Tlaib insists that silencing her voice is an attempt to prevent violence, regardless of whether it is against Israelis or Palestinians. She wishes Bergman had contacted her to discuss his concerns and believes that much of the criticism she faces stems from bigotry and assumptions that she supports terrorism based on her ethnicity and faith. Tlaib vows to continue criticizing Israel’s policies despite the challenges she will undoubtedly face. (Read more Rashida Tlaib stories.)
