This Jackpot ‘Has a Lot of People Dreaming Big’

If you’re feeling particularly lucky this weekend, you may want to pick up a Powerball ticket. CNN reports that officials from the Multi-State Lottery Association have bumped up the prize for Saturday night’s drawing in Tallahassee, Fla., from a paltry $800 million to $825 million (cash value: $410.2 million), thanks to healthy ticket sales across the nation. If someone holds a winning ticket after the picks, that would be the second-largest prize in Powerball history, surpassed only by a $1.586 billion jackpot that was split three ways in 2016. It would also make it the fifth-largest lottery jackpot ever in the US.

“A Powerball jackpot this size has a lot of people dreaming big,” Powerball official Drew Svitko says in a release. He does warn, however, that “Powerball is supposed to be a fun game” and that everyone should “play responsibly and within your limits—it only takes one $2 ticket to win.” The huge jackpot came about after 36 drawings straight produced no winner. And if no one wins on Saturday? Lottery officials estimate the prize will reach an annuitized $1 billion for Monday’s Halloween drawing. Tickets are sold in 45 states, as well as Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and Washington, DC, per ABC News. (Read more Powerball stories.)
