NEW YORK — Get ready for the ninth season of “Bachelor in Paradise”! Host Jesse Palmer is here to guarantee you two things about this season: it’s going to be wet, and it’s going to be wild (emphasis on the wet, trust me). As we head into the premiere, there’s not much we know just yet. The previews have teased cameos from four former Bachelorettes and a beach wedding by the end of the season. But if there’s one thing we’ve learned from this show, it’s that anything can happen in Paradise.
If you’re new to Paradise or need a refresher, here’s how it works: at the end of each week, there’s a rose ceremony. If you don’t receive a rose, you’re sent home. The power to hand out roses switches between the men and women each week.
In this first week of Paradise, we have seven men and 11 women, meaning four women will be heading home by the end of the week. Unless, of course, another man joins Paradise before then.
So let’s dive right in and recap the premiere of Bachelor in Paradise Season 9, shall we?
The cast of this season was harder to keep track of than the number of times they said “vibes” in this episode. But don’t worry, we’ll break it down for you. We have Aaron B., who went from brokenhearted to lighthearted. Then there’s Aaron S., the other Aaron. Blake, who has already dated three Bachelorettes. Brayden, known for his iconic earrings. Brooklyn, the girl who can’t seem to keep her earrings in. Cat, the one with the unforgettable facial expressions. Eliza, back for her second time in Paradise, searching for a straight line, not a triangle. Greer, the Southern Belle. Jess, the glitter girl. Kat, who despises bugs, heat, and especially sand. Kylee, the hot commodity. Mercedes, the girl who rides a tractor in a bikini. Olivia, who smells like a garden (the good kind). Peter, known as Pilot Pete, but not the one you’re thinking of. Rachel, the former Bachelorette. Sam J., the one who gets nervous hives. Sean, also known as Ken. And lastly, Will, the jacket guy who fell into the water (spoiler alert!).
Rachel Recchia was the first cast member to arrive on the beach, making her only the second “Bachelorette” in Paradise history. She’s hopeful that the third time’s the charm for her in Paradise. After Rachel, the rest of the cast members join the beach one by one, while the others engage in small talk.
Before even stepping foot on the beach, Brooklyn made it clear that she does not like Kat. It seems their animosity has carried over from Zach’s season. Unfortunately, we didn’t witness any confrontation between them on the beach, but we’ll definitely want to keep an eye on this dynamic.
In terms of the first kiss in Paradise, it was quite overshadowed by a discussion about sucking toes. Will and Olivia found themselves on one of the day beds, where they quickly started talking about Olivia’s toes and how “suckable” they are. They even made their way to the ocean to rinse her toes, but interestingly enough, they were still sandy when she returned to the day bed. Will then leaned in for a kiss. Later on, we learn that Will thought talking about sucking toes was the natural segue into making out, while Olivia saw it as a romantic moment.
Kylee, the hot commodity, received the first date card of Paradise. She expressed her dilemma of being torn between Will, Brayden, and Blake to Mercedes. Let’s not forget that Kylee has been eagerly waiting to meet Aven ever since he commented a fire emoji on one of her Instagram posts. Despite the fact that Will had already kissed Olivia, Kylee chose him for the date. This raises the question posed by Wells, the bartender and professional advice giver, of whether you can discuss someone’s suckable toes but still go on a date with someone else.
Kylee and Will’s first date was a romantic candlelit affair surrounded by water. It was so romantic, in fact, that Will even pulled out Kylee’s chair for her but ended up tripping and falling into the water. Considering his self-diagnosed fear of water, he handled the fall quite well. As the background music swelled, a group of fire performers appeared, and Kylee and Will shared a kiss. In his confessional, Will admitted that he was falling for Kylee.
The episode also treated us to a kissing montage. First up were Kat and Brayden, an unexpected couple that somehow worked. They were followed by Sean and Rachel, Blake and Jess, and Mercedes and Aaron B. While we didn’t witness a kiss between Aaron S. and Sam, they did share a sweet moment by the water as they tried to save a blowfish, which is practically the same thing as kissing, right?
Sadly, the first breakup of Paradise also occurred during this episode. The morning after Will’s date with Kylee, he approached Olivia to have a conversation. He confessed that he was developing feelings for Kylee and wanted to fully pursue that relationship. Understandably, Olivia was upset, but if the previews are any indication, there may still be hope for her.
To end the episode on a cliffhanger, a surprise cast member made their entrance. It was none other than Aven, the person Kylee was most excited to meet. Episode 2 is sure to bring the drama. Could this truly be the most dramatic season yet?
