The Ultimate Guide to Tesla’s Cybertruck Release: What You Need to Know – NPR

Two years after missing its initial delivery target, Tesla’s Cybertruck is finally set to roll out of factories. The much-anticipated truck is expected to be delivered on Thursday, marking Tesla’s entrance into the pickup market. CEO Elon Musk first revealed the Cybertruck’s controversial design four years ago which boasts a polarizing polygonal shape. Despite a $100 refundable deposit placed by hundreds of thousands of buyers, it remains uncertain how many trucks Tesla has produced. During an October earnings call, Musk cautioned that it could be 18 months before the Cybertruck is a significant source of revenue for the company.

Tesla’s decision to use stainless steel alloy instead of conventional materials has caused numerous challenges during production. The polygonal design, described as “origami,” and the fragile windows, initially marketed as “armor glass,” have also posed problems. Many production inconsistencies have been attributed to the unorthodox design, resulting in a slow ramp up for production. Moreover, the pandemic and supply chain slow downs have exacerbated these problems.

Despite being slated for late 2021, Tesla’s Cybertruck will have to compete with electric pickups by its competitors, including Rivian, Ford, and GM. Many consumers remain hesitant to buy electric pickups due to the high price and limited charging infrastructure.

While confidence remains high that the Cybertruck will succeed, its practicality and mass appeal remain to be seen. The one-piece body design, for instance, may limit the ability to customize the truck to suit various business needs. Additionally, certain details about the truck’s capabilities and features are yet to be announced, leading to further perplexity.

Contributions made by NPR’s Fernando Alfonso III and Bill Chappell have further helped shed light on Tesla’s Cybertruck.
