The US military must navigate the woke wars without becoming a target. While the details of the defence funding bill recently passed by the House of Representatives may not hold much significance, the Republican message is clear: “Act like real men or jeopardize America’s ability to win wars.”
It was only a matter of time before woke culture crept into US national security. The Pentagon finds itself in the crosshairs of the Republican party alongside corporate America, state pension funds, and educational institutions. For the first time, cultural provisions were included in the US defence budget, placing restrictions on LGBT+ rights, women’s access to abortion, and diversity training for recruits.
The argument is that the Pentagon has become a tool for social engineering that undermines America’s military capabilities. The Republican party has increasingly adopted an anti-woke stance as its core message. However, since Democrats will never accept the notion that the US military is facing a “crisis of masculinity,” the Pentagon will have to adapt to a new form of polarization. This will be both costly and detrimental to US national security.
Unfortunately, the timing could not be worse. The Pentagon faces a challenge unrelated to woke culture. For the first time since transitioning to an all-volunteer force in the early 1970s, the US military is struggling to meet its recruitment targets. It is unable to attract enough qualified individuals, regardless of gender. Tight labor markets, rising obesity rates among young Americans, and increasing mental health issues are contributing factors. Currently, over three-quarters of Americans aged 17 to 24 do not meet the Pentagon’s standards. Both political parties have failed to address this issue.
Given these circumstances, it is a particularly unfavorable moment for the Pentagon to narrow down its pool of recruits. Instead, it should be easing its entry criteria. Even in the best of times, the basis on which Republicans demand these restrictions is questionable. Interestingly, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is providing a real-world example of the consequences when an anti-woke military invades a country undergoing rapid modernization.
In contrast to Russia’s predominantly male frontline forces and discriminatory policies towards gay individuals, Ukraine has transformed into one of Europe’s most progressive fighting forces virtually overnight. When faced with a foreign invader, it makes sense to accept any able-bodied individual willing to fight. Approximately 10% of Ukraine’s combat troops are women, and some LGBT+ soldiers proudly display insignia that represents their identity. Discrimination within Ukraine’s military and society as a whole has reportedly decreased. In the face of adversity, there are no genders or sexual orientations in a foxhole.
Previous debates over military demographics in the US have been contentious, such as the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy in the 1990s. However, opponents of military desegregation in 1948 were silenced by the African-American soldiers’ professionalism. Nevertheless, the luxury of having an adversary like Russia, which actively supplies real-time data supporting the domestic debate on woke culture, is unprecedented.
Let’s examine the results for ourselves. Despite being at a disadvantage in many ways, with limitations on their use of western-supplied missiles against Russian territory, Ukraine’s troops have exceeded expectations. They demonstrate higher morale and a fighting force that better represents their society. The effectiveness gap between the Russian and Ukrainian militaries speaks for itself.
The fact that these realities are often ignored undermines the Republican argument that their pursuit is military readiness. While they may have valid criticisms in some areas, the hyperbole surrounding masculinity drowns out their arguments. The strongest militaries are usually those that reflect and embrace the diversity of the societies they defend.
