The Letters and Lessons That Define Mr. Pagsi’s Enduring Legacy

Mr. Pagsi, a legendary teacher in the education field, addressed his fellow colleagues at the Araneta Coliseum in 2007. He was not just a good teacher, but a great one who inspired generations and left a lasting impact beyond education. Joining the faculty of Ateneo High School in 1951, Mr. Pagsi taught for more than four decades and became a renowned figure in molding both students and teachers.

His influence was so significant that Ateneo sent new instructors and education students to observe him, hoping to mold them into teachers like Mr. Pagsi. Interestingly, there are no existing videos of him teaching in the classroom, making it impossible to have a second-hand experience of witnessing his teaching methods. However, Mr. Pagsi’s writings and speeches were carefully documented by his wife, Lynn Pagsanghan, allowing us to catch a glimpse of his magical teaching approach.

Dr. Vernon Totanes, Mr. Pagsi’s former student and now the university librarian at Ateneo de Manila, curated and edited the best of Mr. Pagsi’s writings into a book titled “Pagsibol: A Biography of Onofre R. Pagsanghan in Speeches, Songs, and Other Writings.” This unique biography combines his own words from the 1940s to the 2010s, organizing them in a way that represents his life story as if he had written an autobiography. The book serves as a tribute to Mr. Pagsi, allowing more people to hear his wisdom and teachings.

“Pagsibol” is divided into three parts: “School,” which includes Mr. Pagsi’s writings from his high school and college days, as well as speeches and talks he delivered to students and fellow teachers; “Theater,” which showcases his creative work such as elocution pieces and songs for theatrical plays; and “Family,” the most personal section, with writings about his family members and heartfelt letters to his wife, Lynn. In these writings, we can truly feel Mr. Pagsi’s passion for his calling and his desire to bring young men closer to Jesus through theater and the creative incorporation of Filipino language into the curriculum.

Mr. Pagsi’s advocacy extended beyond Ateneo as he worked in Balik-balik, Tondo, for 15 years, bringing theater to the slums and raising funds for the Boys Club through Filipino plays. He also played a significant role in establishing the Philippine High School for the Arts in Mt. Makiling, where talented children are trained in various artistic disciplines.

Throughout his life, Mr. Pagsi’s love for theater and the arts was nurtured at the old Ateneo, where he witnessed plays directed by influential Jesuit priests. He credits his Jesuit teachers, particularly Fr. John Delaney, for shaping him into the teacher he became. Mr. Pagsi’s deep faith in his students is reflected in his belief that they will bring brightness and prosperity to the Philippines in the future.

With quotes like “Love your calling with passion. It is the meaning of your life,” Mr. Pagsi’s main message remains timeless and inspiring. This sentiment is beautifully captured in the book “Pagsibol,” which is not only a valuable gift for teachers who have made a significant impact but also a source of inspiration for those aspiring to do the same. Parents, too, can find guidance in Mr. Pagsi’s teachings as teaching by example is an essential part of their role.

While some sections of the book may be more engaging for those familiar with Ateneo or Dulaang Sibol, the core message of love and passion for one’s calling shines through. Dr. Totanes, who conceived the book two decades ago, tirelessly worked on it, collecting materials from Mrs. Pagsi and adding them to the book. Despite the challenges and Mr. Pagsi’s fluctuating health, the project was completed during the pandemic, and the first edition was presented to Mr. Pagsi and Lynn on their 62nd wedding anniversary.

“Pagsibol” is a testament to the incredible journey and impact of Mr. Onofre R. Pagsanghan, a teacher who not only instructed but inspired countless individuals with his wisdom and passion.
