According to Mike Rogers, former director at the National Security Agency, artificial intelligence (AI) is a “double-edged sword” when it comes to government cybersecurity. While AI can provide valuable knowledge about adversary actions and help anticipate future moves, it also increases the potential for system breaches. Rogers highlighted that foreign adversaries can leverage AI for their own purposes, which creates advantages and disadvantages for both sides in cyber combat. Currently, the objective is to anticipate and deny adversaries’ actions while driving them toward actions that favor the U.S., although there is still progress to be made in this area.
Rogers, along with several other speakers, recently discussed the state of cybersecurity in the age of AI at an event hosted by Semafor. These conversations emphasized the unique opportunities AI provides across industries, such as finance, national security, and combating misinformation campaigns. However, the speakers also acknowledged that AI introduces new risks and vulnerabilities.
Chris Novak, managing director at Verizon cybersecurity consulting, echoed similar sentiments in relation to AI’s impact on the business sector. While companies may currently have an advantage due to AI, Novak warned that attackers will eventually catch up with more diverse and creative attacks. This assessment came from Novak’s discussion of Verizon’s 2023 Data Breach Investigation Report (DBIR), an annual report on data breaches and cyber incidents.
Jenny Menna, Chief Information Security Officer at Sallie Mae, also recognized the threat and opportunity presented by AI in the consumer banking industry. Menna sees AI as a solution to reduce administrative work and improve code-writing. However, she cautioned that wider access to AI can also empower fraudsters and increase the risks associated with consumer banking.
Overall, AI’s impact on cybersecurity is complex, with benefits and risks on multiple fronts. While AI provides valuable insights and potential advantages, it also raises concerns about system vulnerabilities and potentially empowering adversaries.
